Climate in Cape Verde

The Climate in Cape Verde is often described as dry-tropical with very little rain fall, in fact some of the islands can go years without any significant rainfall.

If it does rain, it is most likely to be between August and October, known as the rainy season, and can be very hot and humid.  The islands minimum temperature during the winter months is around 19 deg C and during the summer months the minimum temperature is around 24 deg C.

The best time to visit is when the climate in Cape Verde is more temperate, between October and June, when the daily average temperature is around 24 deg C.

From late November until March it is quite common to experience the “Harmatton” winds or “Calima” as it is known in the Canary Islands, blowing in from the Sahara Desert. The Harmatton winds are hot, dry and dusty and can produce a sandy haze over the islands.

Due to the climate in Cape Verde, the waters surrounding the Cape Verde Islands are quite often responsible for forming hurricanes, although the islands very rarely experience the full strength of the hurricane.

The hurricane strengthens as it travels across the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean before reaching Florida and the Caribbean.
